RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Dominique Wilkins, a great basketball legend, and inviting him to
appear before the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dominique Wilkins was born on January 12, 1960, in Paris, France, and later
attended the University of Georgia where he became the school's all-time scoring
leader; and
WHEREAS,
this legendary basketball player entered the 1982 National Basketball
Association draft his junior season in college and went on to become the ninth
all-time leading scorer with 26,668 points and 11th on the all-time career
scoring average list in the league's history; and
WHEREAS,
Dominique Wilkins joined the Atlanta Hawks in 1982 and was instrumental in the
team's success in the 1980s, electrifying Atlanta sports fans as the club
recorded 50 win seasons for four straight seasons; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Wilkins continues to contribute his amazing talents to the Atlanta Hawks by
serving as the Hawks' Vice President-Basketball, advising the senior management
team, working in public relations, and serving as a member to the executive
committee and the Hawk's Free Agent Acquisition Committee; and
WHEREAS,
his strong commitment to the community is further demonstrated by his active
involvement in many local and national charity endeavors, including the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Special
Olympics, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the American Lung Association;
and
WHEREAS,
this star athlete joined basketball's immortals with his induction into the
Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2004, the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame in 2005,
and most recently the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006;
and
WHEREAS,
Dominique Wilkins is a devoted husband and loving father to his two sons and
four daughters; and
WHEREAS,
Dominique Wilkins is a tremendous athlete whose contributions to the NBA, the
University of Georgia Bulldogs, and the Atlanta Hawks, as well as his
outstanding civic leadership, have brought fame and honor to the State of
Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body
recognizes Dominique Wilkins as a great basketball legend, commends him on his
induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, salutes him as a
great Georgian, and invites him to appear before the House of Representatives at
a date and time to be fixed by the Speaker for the purposes of being recognized
by and addressing the House of Representatives and receiving an appropriate copy
of this resolution.
