By: Representatives Yates of the 73rd, Keen of the 179th, Lakly of the 72nd, Freeman of the 140th, Thomas of the 100th, and others

A RESOLUTION

Urging all local school systems in Georgia to honor Veterans´ Day; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Veterans´ Day is celebrated throughout the nation every year to honor those citizens who have served in the military; and

WHEREAS, the men and women who answered the call to serve their country in times of war and times of peace are worthy of being so honored; and

WHEREAS, the elementary and secondary school children of our state, in particular, can benefit from learning of the sacrifice and sense of duty to state and country; and

WHEREAS, every corner of the state has one or more veterans´ organizations with members who would be willing to participate in Veterans´ Day ceremonies in local schools; and

WHEREAS, closing the schools in honor of Veterans´ Day would be far less instructive and meaningful than planned ceremonies which include the participation of local veterans and school children; and

WHEREAS, school children would learn a great deal about patriotism and love of country through interaction with their neighbors who served in the military.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body urge each local school system in this state to develop and implement a program in conjunction with Veterans´ Day, which should, if possible, include the participation and assistance of local veterans´ organizations, to inculcate in students a feeling of patriotism and pride in their country and make them aware of the sacrifices that have been made so they can live freely.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the public and the press and to the State School Superintendent with a request to distribute copies of this resolution to all school systems in this state.
