A
RESOLUTION
Commending
the Leadership Academy for Girls and its patron, Ms. Oprah Winfrey; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Leadership Academy for Girls was founded with the purpose of providing
highly talented and motivated but impoverished young women of South Africa with
the opportunity to obtain a first-class education and training in life skills in
preparation for leadership roles in society; and
WHEREAS,
the idea for the academy originated in 2000 with a pledge of $10 million by Ms.
Oprah Winfrey, who, since 2006, has taken on all financing of the $40 million
school; and
WHEREAS,
the academy will graduate 75 girls in three years and guarantees to support them
educationally in medicine, education, and the arts and sciences;
and
WHEREAS,
the academy will produce the world's first leadership class which is
collectively and personally grounded in the experiences of poverty and social
deprivation; and
WHEREAS,
as Rev. Andrew J. Young has stated, "this sounds like what the Rev. Martin
Luther King, Jr., called 'a revolution in values,' which all the world
desperately needs."
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the Leadership Academy for Girls and its patron, Ms. Oprah
Winfrey, for their great vision and contributions to the welfare of
society.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Oprah
Winfrey.
