A
RESOLUTION
Urging
the Board of Natural Resources to refrain from adopting any rule that would
weaken protections of coastal salt marshlands against development; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
a proposed rule is before the Board of Natural Resources this week that will
make development along our precious coastal salt marshlands much less expensive
for the developers but at an enormous cost to the environmental quality of this
vital area of our state; and
WHEREAS,
such proposal has been prompted by a tiny group of developers and their lawyers
and lobbyist at the expense of everyone else in this state, including
generations to follow; and such a rule would be a gross abuse of the trust that
the people of this state placed in our state government as stewards of this
irreplaceable resource; and
WHEREAS,
we have protected these salt marshlands by strong legislation since 1970, and
the growing popularity of our coast as a place to visit and live makes it ever
more important that the salt marsh be strongly protected.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body strongly urge the members of the Board of Natural Resources to refrain
from adopting any rule to benefit a tiny group of developers, which rule would
be highly destructive of coastal salt marshlands in this state, because the
financial savings such persons would realize by such action are trivial and
fleeting when compared to the immense value of these lands to this state and its
people.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit forthwith a copy of this resolution to the Board of
Natural Resources.
