A RESOLUTION


Commending R.E.M. on their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, R.E.M. emerged on the music scene in Athens in 1980 as a unique rock band imprinting their work with a fresh, new style which defined the genre of Alternative Rock; and

WHEREAS, since 1980 the band has continued to entertain audiences with their individual brand of music, releasing 13 studio records; and

WHEREAS, R.E.M. has had several Number One albums and has sold over 70 million records, making the band one of the most critically and commercially successful groups of all time; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of their tremendous success and popularity, as well as their many contributions, they have received three Grammy awards, six Rolling Stone covers, numerous MTV Video Music Awards, and a host of humanitarian awards; and

WHEREAS, the band´s commitment to others is reflected in their generous financial support of such Georgia projects as the Boys and Girls Club, local school music programs, and other grass roots community organizations; their worldwide philanthropic contributions have included Amnesty International, Greenpeace, Vote for Change, and Doctors Without Borders; and

WHEREAS, R.E.M. is rightfully deserving of induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame for the band´s many successes, and it is both fitting and proper that we recognize this band´s contribution to Georgia´s musical history.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body commends R.E.M. for their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and looks forward to seeing the band´s artistic work recognized and recorded into Georgia´s musical history and legacy.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the members of R.E.M.
