A RESOLUTION


Honoring and remembering the life of Mrs. Janie Evans Fowles; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Janie Evans Fowles was a woman of rare patience and compassion, an accomplished educator, a stellar mother, and a model Georgian; and

WHEREAS, Janie Evans Fowles was born the second child of Toney Evans and Orrie Singleton on December 10, 1928, in Savannah, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, she married the love of her life, Marcus Adolph Fowles, Sr., with whom she raised two wonderful children, Karen and Marcus, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, she was raised as a strong Christian, attending St. Phillips Monumental African Methodist Episcopal Church, St. George Episcopal Church and Grace Episcopal Church, and St. Mathew's Episcopal Church in Savannah, where she sang in the choir and served as a member of St. Mary's Guild and the vestry; and

WHEREAS, Janie graduated from Alfred E. Beach High School in 1947; and in 1950, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Savannah State College and began a career in education at a one-room school house in Sylvania; and

WHEREAS, in 1957, Janie earned her first Master's degree at Columbia University in New York City, where she taught for over 30 years, and received a second Master's degree in education administration and supervision at St. John's University in 1976; and

WHEREAS, Janie returned to her native Savannah after retiring as the chairperson of the Sewanhaka High School English department and joined the faculty of Savannah State University, where she served as an esteemed professor until 2005; and

WHEREAS, Janie was appointed to the Savannah-Chatham County School Board in 1999 and served her community faithfully until her passing; and

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia has lost one of its most accomplished and beloved citizens with the passing of Mrs. Janie Evans Fowles.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mrs. Janie Evans Fowles and extend their most sincere condolences to her family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mrs. Janie Evans Fowles.
