A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life of Ms. Harriet Ethel Sherald and expressing regret at her passing; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia recently lost one of its finest and most distinguished
citizens with the tragic and untimely passing of Harriet Ethel Sherald;
and
WHEREAS,
she was born in Columbus, Georgia, the daughter of the late Mrs. Eleanor Mary
Alexander Sherald and the late Mr. Amos Percy Sherald, Jr., and the descendant
of two of the oldest, most well-known and highly respected families of Columbus,
Georgia. Her maternal grandparents were the late Mrs. Annie Johnson Alexander
and the late Mr. Gabriel Alexander. Her paternal grandparents were the late
Mrs. Ethel Williams Sherald and the late Mr. Amos Percy Sherald, Sr., who
established Sherald's Barber Shop in 1898 which closed its doors in January
2000; and
WHEREAS,
Harriet was a devoted and faithful member of the First African Baptist Church
teaching Sunday school and was part of the Rachel Missionary Circle; and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Sherald's early education was received in the public schools of Columbus,
and she graduated from Spencer High School in 1947, she attended Spelman College
and Albany State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary
education, and she earned a master's degree in elementary education from New
York University; and
WHEREAS,
she first taught at Lumpkin Elementary School in Lumpkin, Georgia and later
returned to Columbus, teaching for 17 years in the Muscogee County School
System, and her last school assignment was Edwina Wood Elementary School;
and
WHEREAS,
her professional affiliations included the Georgia Retired Educators
Association, the Association of Muscogee County Retired Educators, Club 13, the
Columbus Phenix City Club of the Negro Business and Professional Women, Inc.,
Silver Star member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for 48 years, and past
president of the Gamma Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority;
and
WHEREAS,
her sparkling personality reflected and mirrored a beautiful smile, and deep
warmth and encouragement were often uttered from her lips; and
WHEREAS,
one of her greatest attributes was her friendliness and concern for others and
she was known to family and friends as "Suzy Sunshine"; and
WHEREAS,
she was granted a peaceful transition from this life to eternal bliss with her
Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 11, 2007; and
WHEREAS,
she leaves to cherish her memory a sister-in-law, Geraldine H. Sherald of
Columbus; two nieces, Harriet Dom Grayson of Lithonia and Amy M. Sherald of
Columbus; two nephews, Amos P. Sherald IV of Long Island, New York and Michael
E. Sherald of Columbus; one great-niece, Caris Grayson; devoted cousins, Cynthia
Saxton of Midland, Georgia, Thomas Works and Ozella Thompson, Columbus, Georgia;
and many other relatives and friends.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body express their deepest and most sincere regret at the passing of Ms.
Harriet Ethel Sherald.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Ms. Harriet Ethel Sherald.
