RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring the life of Mrs. Annette Milliken; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Annette Milliken was a southern lady of exceptional taste and distinction
and was a shining pillar of the Morgan County community; and
WHEREAS,
Annette, a proud daughter of Georgia, was born in Jackson County, graduated from
Bass High School in Atlanta, and relished many happy vacations visiting with her
aunts, uncles, and cousins in Athens; and
WHEREAS,
she married her high school sweetheart, John Milliken, on August 4, 1956, and
Annette started a career at the Fulton Federal Savings and Loan, but, after
giving birth to her first daughter, Susan, in 1960 and her second daughter,
Gail, in 1964, Annette decided to become a full-time mother and homemaker;
and
WHEREAS,
John, who worked for Southern Bell, was transferred to Bell Labs in Murray Hill,
New Jersey, where the Milliken family spent several years and where Annette
created the Candle Cellar, a business that specialized in quality, handcrafted
candles; and
WHEREAS,
when the family returned to Georgia, Annette started another candle business in
Stone Mountain, adding floristry and a number of other crafts to her repertoire;
and
WHEREAS,
Annette's love of flowers became a lifelong passion, and she was renowned
throughout the United States for her extensive knowledge and keen artistic
sense, winning countless blue ribbons for her flower arrangements, the
Governor's Award in the Connecticut Flower Show, and the title of National Life
Flower Show Judge; and
WHEREAS,
she was selected as president of the Greensboro Garden Club, first vice
president of the Imaginative Judges Study Group, was a member of the Northeast
Georgia Judges Council, and was a co-founder of the Antebellum Garden Club;
and
WHEREAS, Annette was proud of her heritage as a Georgian and as a citizen of the United States, and she was treasurer of the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; and
WHEREAS, Annette was proud of her heritage as a Georgian and as a citizen of the United States, and she was treasurer of the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; and
WHEREAS,
Annette was proud of her community and state and often invited newcomers to the
many clubs, social organizations, and political rallies in which she
participated, serving as president of the Bethany-Buckhead Friendship Club and
welcoming new community residents through the Lake Oconee Newcomers and the
Madison Newcomers; and
WHEREAS,
Annette was an active member of the Republican party and supported it with
unparalleled enthusiasm by hosting fundraisers and opening her home to
Republican candidates for office; and
WHEREAS,
her life was marked by a rare warmth and generosity, and she never hesitated to
help friends and strangers in need and was always ready to offer friendly advice
or a supportive hug; and
WHEREAS,
for Annette, life was an adventure, believing that, "one may skin their knees
along the way, but sharing the sunrise on top of the mountain with friends and
family makes the journey worth all the effort."
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together to honor the memory of Mrs. Annette Milliken, recognize
her many amazing accomplishments, express their deepest regret at her passing,
and extend their most sincere condolences to her family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mrs. Annette Milliken.
