RESOLUTION
Urging
the United States Congress to pass the National Museum of the American Latino
Commission Act; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the contributions of the Hispanic community to the United States date back to
1565, when the Spanish established the first permanent settlement in United
States territory in St. Augustine, Florida; and
WHEREAS,
Latinos in the United States have influenced and enriched this country since its
founding and continue to make important contributions; and
WHEREAS,
there exists a need for a home for historical artifacts, images, and stories
documenting over 500 years of Latino contributions to our nation;
and
WHEREAS,
the United States House of Representatives on February 6, 2007, passed by
unanimous voice vote the National Museum of the American Latino Commission Act
for the creation of a commission to study the feasibility of and to establish a
plan for a new national museum for this purpose; and
WHEREAS,
identical legislation has been introduced and favorably reported out of
committee in the United States Senate.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body does
hereby urge the United States Congress to adopt the National Museum of the
American Latino Commission Act for the important purpose of furthering the
commemoration of Latino contributions to the United States of
America.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to each member
of the Georgia congressional delegation.
