RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring the life of Dr. Otis W. Smith; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
during the course of his remarkable life, Dr. Otis W. Smith touched countless
lives with his generous spirit; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Smith was a native Atlantan, born on May 12, 1925, at Grady Hospital;
and
WHEREAS,
he was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and Morehouse College
where he lettered in four sports; and
WHEREAS,
he received his medical education at Meharry Medical College in Nashville,
Tennessee, and became the first African American certified pediatrician in
Georgia, helping to integrate the medical staff at Grady Hospital;
and
WHEREAS,
he was an outstanding civil rights leader for more than half a century, serving
as president of the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP for over ten years;
and
WHEREAS,
he contributed to his community through the donation of his time and many
talents, serving as a member of the board of the Sickle Cell Foundation of
Georgia for over 30 years and serving as a lifetime member of Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity; and
WHEREAS,
his unparalleled organizational and leadership talents, his remarkable patience
and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, and his acute sensitivity to the needs
of the citizens of his community and state earned him the respect and admiration
of his colleagues and associates; and
WHEREAS,
the untimely passing of this generous, kind, and devoted man leaves an
unfillable void in the hearts and lives of his family and friends.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of
Dr. Otis W. Smith and extend their most sincere condolences to his family
and friends.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Otis W.
Smith.
