A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
and remembering the life of Brooks Nelson Goolsby; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia lost one of its most distinguished citizens with the
passing of Brooks Nelson Goolsby on January 19, 2007; and
WHEREAS,
he was born September 26, 1919, in the Pleasant Hill community of Talbot County,
Georgia, to Lawrence Nelson Goolsby and Irene Hendricks Goolsby;
and
WHEREAS,
during World War II, Brooks Goolsby was the first name drawn in the Talbot
County draft; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Goolsby nobly served in the infantry for four and one-half years as a radio
operator and instructor and participated in five major battles of the European
Theater of Operations; and
WHEREAS,
he was a supervisor at Callaway Mills in Manchester, Georgia, and retired from
Milliken and Company; and
WHEREAS,
he was an author and historian, publishing a history of Pleasant Hill in 1993
that chronicled details about the Goolsby family and related families in the
community; and
WHEREAS,
he compiled a popular weekly newspaper column for several years, recounting
historic events in Talbot County; and
WHEREAS,
he was a member of the American Legion and Woodland United Methodist Church,
where he served as treasurer, lay speaker, a member of the administrative board,
and a long-time adult Sunday school teacher; and
WHEREAS,
he leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 61 years, Marilu Doster Goolsby, two
sons and a daughter in law, a daughter and a son-in-law, three brothers, two
sisters, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS,
in life he commanded the esteem of his fellow Georgians; at his death we mingle
our sympathies with the grief of his family and friends.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Brooks
Nelson Goolsby and extend their most sincere condolences to his
family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Brooks Nelson Goolsby.
