A RESOLUTION


Commending the Augusta State University's mens basketball team; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the 2007-2008 Augusta State University mens basketball team has established a standard of athletic excellence with equal emphases on character and academics; and

WHEREAS, this superlative team completed a whirlwind season, equaling the school record with 27 season wins, their highest record since the 1969-1970 season; and

WHEREAS, the Jaguars advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history, to the Final Four for the first time, and to the National Championship game for the first time, and they were the national finalists and the NCAA South Atlantic Regional Champions for the first time; and

WHEREAS, they were rated number six in the preseason national ranking, achieving their first preseason national ranking in school history, and they rose as high as number five in the nation during the regular season, their highest national ranking in school history; and

WHEREAS, Tyrekus "AJ" Bowman, Garret Siler, and Ben Madgen were named All-Peach Belt Conference; Bowman and Siler were named All-South Atlantic Region; Bowman was the first two-time All-American player in school history; and Bowman and Siler were named to the Elite Eight All-Tournament team; and

WHEREAS, this outstanding team played on national television for the first time in school history, setting a new school record for a combined 51 wins during the last two seasons; and

WHEREAS, Augusta State University's senior class racked up an 85-38 record over the last four seasons and became the second winningest senior class in school history; and

WHEREAS, Tyrekus "AJ" Bowman concluded his outstanding career with 1,827 points, the second highest score in school history behind Derek Stewart's total of 1,895 and the second highest in Peach Belt Conference history behind only Carlton Farr of Francis Marion's total of 1,863 points from 1990 through 1995; and

WHEREAS, with his 20-point effort against the Warriors, Madgen went over the 1,000-point mark in only his 64th career game for Augusta State University, and he currently stands at 1,012 points; Siler surpassed that milestone during the national semifinal win over Alaska-
Anchorage with 17 game points, and he currently stands at 1,033 total career points; and

WHEREAS, the phenomenal performance of this team is a clear indication of the outstanding athletic ability, the dedication and hard work, and the unity of purpose and spirit of each member of the team; their superb offensive and defensive talents; and the astute guidance and direction of their coaches; and

WHEREAS, as they have performed with courage and determination, the Augusta State University team has brought honor to Augusta State University, the City of Augusta, and the State of Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Augusta State University mens basketball team for its unparalleled determination, tenacity, and character; commend the coaches; and extend their sincerest best wishes for continued success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Augusta State University.
