RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mrs. Donna Smith and the fourth and fifth grade students at
Russell Elementary School; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Donna Smith, a 30 year teaching veteran, has devoted many hours beyond the
school day to prepare Russell Elementary School's fourth and fifth grade
students to participate in a space shuttle mission by way of a shuttle
simulator; and
WHEREAS,
this year marks the
USS
Intrepid's fifth flight, and Mrs. Smith is
well qualified in her training to lead this mission, receiving her training at
programs such as the NASA Educational Workshop, the Civil Air Patrol for
Educators, the International Space Station Conference for Educators, Space Camp
for Teachers, Advanced Space Camp for Teachers, and Mars Robotics Training;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Smith has received various grants throughout her career for aerospace
activities, and this year the school received a grant from the Georgia Science
Teachers' Association; and
WHEREAS,
throughout the school year, students have trained for this mission using NASA
software and learning how to read schematic diagrams detailing different
systems; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia Performance Standards are being implemented at Russell Elementary
School using a hands-on approach to learning; and
WHEREAS,
visitors are invited to participate along with the students on Thursday, May 8,
2008, at "Mission Control" at Russell Elementary School.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together to recognize the faculty, staff, and students at Russell
Elementary School; commend them for their outstanding and innovative approach to
implementing the Georgia Performance Standards; and wish Mrs. Donna Smith and
the fourth and fifth grade students a most successful space mission on May 8,
2008.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Nancy
DiPetrillo.
