A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and congratulating the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta on the celebration of its 90th Anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta is celebrating 90 years of civic leadership and active community involvement, having been founded in 1918 as the sixth Kiwanis Club in the world; and

WHEREAS, this club in Atlanta is the oldest Kiwanis club in Georgia and is the "mother club" of all Kiwanis Clubs in our great state; and

WHEREAS, its hundreds of dedicated members make the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta one of the largest civic clubs in the world; and

WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta, through guidance and example, works to develop future generations of leaders while performing countless projects to help children and communities every day; and

WHEREAS, their weekly luncheon speakers are of such high quality that this Kiwanis Club has come to be known as the Atlanta version of the National Press Club; members and Kiwanis visitors hear captains of industry and a wide variety of professionals speak as well as political leaders such as our Governor and the Mayor of Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta was one of the first clubs to welcome and actively recruit women members, one of whom was the late and beloved journalist Celestine Sibley; and

WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta maintains a nonprofit foundation which gives over $250,000.00 per year to local Atlanta area charities, mainly to those that serve children, such as the Metro Atlanta Boys and Girls Clubs, Hillside Hospital, the Salvation Army, and some 30 other worthwhile organizations; and

WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta has sponsored Camp Kiwanis in Madison County since 1951, giving urban youth a chance to experience and learn about the great outdoors; and

WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta works with the USO to welcome our men and women of the armed forces coming from and going to assignments overseas and throughout the United States and offers them refreshments and a comfortable place to rest and relax at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport; and

WHEREAS, the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta proudly sponsors the STAR student program to recognize many of Georgia´s top achieving students and their teachers.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body shows its appreciation to the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta and congratulates the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta on this important date in its long and impressive history of service to the children of Georgia and wishes the members of this great organization continued success in all its endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta.
