RESOLUTION
Commending
and congratulating Charles Ferguson on the occasion of his retirement; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Charles Ferguson is the Pataula Judicial Circuit District Attorney and is a
life-long resident of Randolph County, graduating from Randolph County High
School in 1966; and
WHEREAS,
he graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Arts degree in
English in 1970, and during his collegiate career, he played football for the
Crimson Tide under Head Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and was a starting offensive
guard both his junior and senior years.; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Ferguson received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Alabama
School of Law in 1974, then returning to his home state and starting a law
practice in Edison, and a year later he moved to Cuthbert and established the
firm of Bowen and Ferguson with Dell Bowen; and
WHEREAS,
on February 24, 1978, Mr. Ferguson was appointed as District Attorney for the
Pataula Circuit by Governor Busbee, after the death of then District Attorney
John Irwin of Dawson and was elected later that year to fill the remainder of
Mr. Irwin´s unexpired term, an office he has held ever since;
and
WHEREAS,
during his years of service, seven Superior Court judges have sat on the bench
during his time as District Attorney, including former Judges Walter I. Geer,
Dell Bowen, Phillip Sheffield, Lowrey Stone, Tracy Moulton, and current Judges
Joe Bishop and Ronnie Joe Lane; and
WHEREAS,
he is a member of the Cuthbert Rotary and Lions clubs, having served as
president of both of these civic organizations;
and
WHEREAS, he is an active member of the Southwest Quarter Habitat for Humanity; and
WHEREAS, he is an active member of the Southwest Quarter Habitat for Humanity; and
WHEREAS,
he is a member of the National District Attorneys Association and the District
Attorneys Association of Georgia and he has served as the Prosecuting Attorneys
Council of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
in 2003, Mr. Ferguson was named as Georgia District Attorney of the Year;
and
WHEREAS,
upon retirement, he plans to spend time with his family and continue to support
his church and community; and
WHEREAS,
he has always been a defender of justice, full of pride for the law, proud of
his American heritage, and faithful to the service of government and our
constitution; it is abundantly fitting and proper that his superlative
accomplishments be recognized appropriately.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body heartily commend Charles Ferguson for his sacrifice, foresight,
accomplishment, and contributions on behalf of justice in Georgia and for the
positive influence he has had upon the lives and futures of countless people in
this state; congratulate him upon the occasion of his retirement; and extend to
him their most sincere best wishes for health and happiness in the
future.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Charles
Ferguson.
