A RESOLUTION


Urging the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia to name the proposed student resource center at the Georgia Institute of Technology in honor of Dr. G. Wayne Clough; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. G. Wayne Clough has served faithfully for 14 years as president of the Georgia Institute of Technology; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure, Georgia Tech was transformed into one of the top ten public research universities in the United States; and

WHEREAS, under his leadership, Georgia Tech increased its enrollment from 12,900 to 18,742, setting records in both enrollment and housing capacity; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Clough´s leadership engineered more than $1 billion in new construction at Georgia Tech, more than doubling facility space to over 14 million gross square feet while rehabilitating dilapidated areas adjacent to campus; and

WHEREAS, under his leadership, Georgia Tech´s annual economic impact on the State of Georgia grew to $4 billion, and more than 100 new companies emerged from Georgia Tech´s research labs; and

WHEREAS, his vision, leadership, patience, and diplomacy have earned him the respect and admiration of the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of Georgia Tech as well as his colleagues and associates throughout this state and nation; and

WHEREAS, as the first alumnus of Georgia Tech to serve as its president, Dr. Clough recognized the unique challenges new students at this esteemed university face; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Clough has spearheaded efforts to create programs to ensure student success, including plans for a student resource center designed to improve student retention and graduation at this institution; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body urge the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia to recognize Dr. G. Wayne Clough for his many years of efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated public service to the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University System of Georgia, and indeed this entire state by naming the proposed Innovative Learning Resource Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology in his honor.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Dr. G. Wayne Clough and to the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
