A RESOLUTION


Commending the citizens of Johnson County on the 150th anniversary of the county´s establishment; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on July 4, 2008, the citizens of Johnson County will hold celebrations in honor of the 150th anniversary of the county´s establishment; and

WHEREAS, Johnson County, created by the General Assembly on December 11, 1958, was carved from portions of Emanuel, Laurens, and Washington counties and named for Georgia governor, senator, and unsuccessful U.S. vice-presidential candidate, Hershel V. Johnson and was the 129th county formed in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the county´s first wood frame courthouse, built in 1859, was replaced in 1895 by a masonry structure built in the Romanesque Revival/Colonial Revival style, which was remodeled in 1938 and again in 1996 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and

WHEREAS, the county seat of Wrightsville, incorporated February 23, 1866, was named for James B. Wright, a member of the committee that selected the site for the town, while the other community in the county is Kite, incorporated September 11, 1891, and named for Shaderick Kight who donated the land for the town and who requested the simpler spelling of his name to facilitate mail delivery; and

WHEREAS, it is only right and proper that the members of this body recognize and commend the citizens of Johnson County for their 150 years of progress as they celebrate the past and look forward to the future.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the citizens of Johnson County on the 150th anniversary of the county´s establishment.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the citizens of Johnson County.
