A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the Jonesboro High School Mock Trial program; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Georgia Mock Trial Competition helps students gain an understanding of the legal system by providing opportunities for school teams to participate in academic competitions where players assume the roles of attorneys and witnesses in a court case, and professional attorneys coach these students in developing skills in questioning, critical thinking, oral advocacy, listening, speaking, reading, and reasoning; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia High School Mock Trial competition was created at North Clayton High School over 20 years ago as a way for students to learn about law and the legal system, and the first state competition was held in 1988 and won by Jonesboro High School; and

WHEREAS, Jonesboro High School has continued with its dominance of state, regional, and national competitions since that time, finally capturing the national championship in 2007, and in 2008, the team won the state competition again and will be competing in Wilmington, Delaware in May, 2008, including team members Laura Parkhouse, Dominique Delgado, Joe Strickland, Brian Bady, Ralph Wilson, Avion Jackson, Jurod James, Lindsay Hargis, Bridget Harris, Braeden Orr, Jayda Hazell, Adrienne Marshall, Tabias Kelly, Miguelande Charlestin, and Kayla Daniels; and

WHEREAS, many of the students, including Jurod James, Tabias Kelly, Laura Parkhouse, Bridget Harris, and Kayla Daniels, won individual awards at state, but the greatest prize was the team's third consecutive state championship; and

WHEREAS, no other team except for Jonesboro has won two consecutive state championships more than once, and no other team has won three consecutive state championships, an accomplishment carried out under the superlative direction of team coaches Honorable John C. Carbo III, Honorable Deborah C. Benefield, Tasha Mosley, Esq., Katie Powers, Anna Cox, and Andrew Cox; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to recognize with particularity the outstanding accomplishments of this extraordinary program.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join together in recognizing and commending the outstanding efforts of the Jonesboro High School Mock Trial program.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Jonesboro High School Mock Trial program.
