RESOLUTION
Commending
Mr. Steve W. Schaefer and congratulating him on the occasion of his retirement;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mr. Steve W. Schaefer has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for
the vital role that he has played in his community and his deep personal
commitment to the public library system in the State of Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
he received his Atrium Baccalaureus degree in History from the University of
Missouri, his Master of Science in Library Science degree from Florida State
University, and his Specialist in Library and Information Science degree from
the University of South Carolina, meeting his wife, Rita, in the library school
at Florida State University; and
WHEREAS,
in his distinguished career, he has served in a myriad of capacities, from
library page and assistant at the St. Louis County Library, to bookmobile clerk
for the Brunswick-Glynn Regional Library System, and to assistant director at
the Ohoopee Regional Library System, before becoming the director of the Uncle
Remus Regional Library System in Madison, Georgia, in 1980, from which he will
retire in August, 2008; and
WHEREAS,
he has diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of his time,
talents, and energy toward the betterment of his state as evidenced dramatically
by his over 32 years of service to the Georgia public library system;
and
WHEREAS,
during his tenure as director of the Uncle Remus Library System, he has taken
the system from a budget of $125,000 to one of nearly $2.5 million and served as
the first chair of the Georgia PINES Network, a state-wide public library
lending system that covers 270 libraries and 133 counties, the largest of its
kind in the nation; and
WHEREAS,
during his time with the Uncle Remus Library System, he has helped to foster
state-wide library cooperation, helping to implement a common accounting system,
serving on numerous associations and boards, and managing construction projects
for eight libraries; and
WHEREAS,
his significant organizational and leadership talents, his remarkable patience
and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, and his sensitivity to the needs of the
members of the Georgia public library system have earned him the respect and
admiration of his colleagues and associates; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this
distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Mr. Steve W. Schaefer for his many decades of efficient,
effective, unselfish, and dedicated service to the Georgia public library system
and the citizens of this state and extend to him their most sincere best wishes
for continued health and happiness.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Steve W.
Schaefer.
