A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the Carter Center on the occasion of its 25th anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Carter Center is promoting the creation of a world in which every man, woman, and child has the opportunity to enjoy good health and live in peace; and

WHEREAS, in 1982, former United States President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn, in partnership with Emory University, founded The Carter Center, and for 25 years, it has engaged in a mission to alleviate human suffering, prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, prevent disease, and advance health and agriculture in the developing world; and

WHEREAS, the Carter Center's staff wage peace, fight disease, and build hope by both engaging with those at the highest levels of government and working side by side with poor and often forgotten people; and

WHEREAS, a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, the Carter Center's work is supported by donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations; and

WHEREAS, the Carter Center's work is guided by five principles: it emphasizes action and results; it does not duplicate the effective efforts of others; it addresses difficult problems and recognizes the possibility of failure as an acceptable risk; it is nonpartisan and acts as a neutral party in dispute resolution activities; and it operates under the belief that people can improve their lives when provided with the necessary skills, knowledge, and access to resources; and

WHEREAS, the Carter Center collaborates with other organizations, public and private, in carrying out its mission; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to recognize with particularity the outstanding and exemplary accomplishments of this extraordinary organization.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join together to recognize the Carter Center on the occasion of its 25th anniversary; commend its outstanding, exemplary efforts to make the world a better place; and express gratitude for the valuable services it provides to this state, the nation, and the world.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Carter Center Board of Trustees.
