A RESOLUTION

Recognizing March 30, 2008, as Black Marriage Day 2008; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Black Marriage Day will be celebrated for the sixth year Sunday, March 30, 2008; and

WHEREAS, it is celebrated annually at locally sponsored events hosted by faith based and community groups on the fourth Sunday in March; and

WHEREAS, starting with only 30 cities in 2003, marriage activists in more than 150 cities celebrated Black Marriage Day in March, 2007, to highlight the benefits of marriage, pay tribute to successful marriages, and to promote marriage in the black community; and

WHEREAS, the national initiative was created to promote marriage in the black community in response to the bleak statistics about marriage; and

WHEREAS, marriage is the most important relationship in an adult's life next to God; and

WHEREAS, studies show that, for the couple, marriage produces longer life, better health, higher income, and a greater accumulation of wealth; and

WHEREAS, in communities where marriages flourish, the property value is higher, crime is lower, and there are better schools; and

WHEREAS, in communities where marriages fail, or fail to happen, the opposite exists and property values are lower, crime is higher, and schools are poorer; and

WHEREAS, the black community has suffered for years with declining marriage rates, increasing divorces, and nearly 70 percent of their children being born out of wedlock, with black women being the most unpartnered group in the country; and
WHEREAS, Black Marriage Day was started to create cultural change in the black community, enabling us to rethink the way we look at marriage; and

WHEREAS, marriage must be celebrated and our community must begin the celebration.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join together to recognize March 30, 2008, as Black Marriage Day 2008.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Clayton County Marriage & Family Initiative, Inc.
