RESOLUTION
Commending
and recognizing Sheriff John Cary Bittick on being the recipient of the National
Sheriffs' Association Ferris E. Lucas National Sheriff of the Year award for
2008; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Sheriff John Cary Bittick entered law enforcement in 1972 as a radio operator
with the Monroe County, Georgia Sheriff's Office, before serving as a deputy
sheriff with the agency; and
WHEREAS,
John Cary Bittick became sheriff of Monroe County in 1982, succeeding his
father, L. Cary Bittick, and continuing a long tradition of law enforcement in
the Bittick family that began in the early 1900's with the Bitticks having
served as sheriff of the county since 1921, with the exception of two terms;
and
WHEREAS,
his grandfather served as sheriff for 30 years, his father for 22 years, and
Sheriff Bittick is now in his 26th as sheriff of Monroe County, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Sheriff Bittick has remained active in law enforcement associations, having
served as President of the National Sheriffs' Association, the Georgia Sheriffs'
Association, and the Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes. Sheriff Bittick is a former
member of the Georgia State Board of Children and Youth and remains active with
both state and national sheriffs' association committees, and serves on several
state and national law enforcement advisory boards; and
WHEREAS,
Sheriff Bittick graduated from the 130th class of the FBI National Academy in
1982, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Program in 1983, and holds a
bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Mercer University; and
WHEREAS,
Sheriff Bittick is married to the former Pamela Browne, has three children, and
is a proud grandfather. He is a deacon at First Baptist Church in Forsyth,
Georgia, and a Mason.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize Sheriff John Cary Bittick and commend him on being the 2008
recipient of the Ferris E. Lucas National Sheriff of the Year award, for his
exemplary career, and for the outstanding service he has provided to his
community, the state, and the nation.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Sheriff John
Cary Bittick.
