A
RESOLUTION
In
memory of Lithangia Shannell Robinson; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Lithangia Shannell Robinson was born, the second of six children, in Atlanta,
Georgia, on September 27, 1918, the beloved daughter William and Essie Digby
Shannell; and
WHEREAS,
she was an outstanding student, receiving her B.A. from Clark College and her
M.A. in counseling from Atlanta University; and
WHEREAS,
she became a great educator teaching in the Marietta, DeKalb, and Cobb County
School Systems and retiring after 31 years of dedicated service to her students;
and
WHEREAS,
she was a woman committed to the struggle for desegregation and equal rights for
African Americans as demonstrated by her service as the first black woman
elected president of the GAE and appointed to the Teachers Retirement System
board, and she also served as chairperson to the Women´s Task Force of
National Education; and
WHEREAS,
Lithangia Robinson will also be remembered for her major impact in the political
arena where she was an advocate for education and the elderly including her
service as the first black woman to chair the Fulton County Democrats, her
service in the national convention as a member of the National Platform
Committee, and her service as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention;
and
WHEREAS,
her tremendous dedication and tireless service to others was also demonstrated
by her work on many community service boards and associations, as well as her
faithful and active membership in St. Paul of The Cross Catholic Church; and
WHEREAS,
she was a loving wife to her husband, Isaac Newton Robinson, whom she married on
December 16, 1947, a devoted mother to their daughter, Lithangia Veronica
Robinson, and a doting grandmother to her two grandchildren, Alfonso Murray and
Ave Murray; and
WHEREAS,
she was a remarkable lady filled with much strength of character and grace, and
she will long be remembered in the hearts of the many friends and family members
who loved her dearly.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body pay tribute to the life of Lithangia Shannell Robinson, an outstanding
citizen of the State of Georgia, and express their sincere condolences to her
family for their loss.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is
authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to
the family of Lithangia Shannell Robinson.
