RESOLUTION
Expressing
cultural, economic, and educational cooperation with the Federal Republic of
Germany; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
there is a bond of friendship between the citizens of Georgia and Germany, and
the people of Georgia welcome opportunities to grow our already deep
relationship at all levels including cultural, academic, and business;
and
WHEREAS,
Atlanta and all of Georgia are honored to serve as the home of the consulate of
the Federal Republic of Germany; and
WHEREAS,
Delta Air Lines and Lufthansa offer nonstop flights between Georgia and Germany;
and
WHEREAS,
sister city relationships exist between Atlanta and Nuremberg, Bayern, and
Marietta and Linz am Rhein, Rheinland – Pfalz; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia is proud that over 350 German companies have operations in Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
many other Georgia colleges and universities also have ties with Germany, among
them the University of Georgia, Emory University, the Georgia Institute of
Technology, Georgia Southern University, and Georgia State University;
and
WHEREAS,
Germany is a top destination for Georgia exports, totaling over $1.1 billion in
2007, with top exports including transportation equipment, miscellaneous
manufactured commodities, non-electrical machinery, computer and electronic
products, and chemicals; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia imported over $4.5 billion in goods from Germany in 2007 through the
Savannah Customs District, with top imports including industrial machinery,
vehicles, optical and medical products and surgical instruments, electric
machinery, and pharmaceutical products; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia is proud to be home to the German American Chamber of Commerce of the
Southern United States, the Goethe-Zentrum German Cultural Center, the German
School of Atlanta, and the German Church Atlanta; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia is proud to be home to several honored German-American friendship
organizations, including Business Stammtisch, Kaffeeklatsch, Atlanta
Saengerkreis, Deutscher Freundschaftsclub, The German Wine Society,
German-American Club, Klub Heimatland, German Heritage Society, and the German
Friendly Society of Savannah; and
WHEREAS,
Germany is the sixth largest capital investor in Georgia with a cumulative FDI
investment in 2006 of over $1.6 billion.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body hereby recognize the special friendship between Georgia and the
Federal Republic of Germany and express our appreciation to his Excellency, Lutz
Gorgens, the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, for his efforts
to promote peace and grow commercial, cultural, and educational ties between our
two nations.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to his
Excellency, Lutz Gorgens.
