RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and congratulating the City of Fort Gaines on its 192nd birthday; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Fort Gaines, the third oldest, continuously populated municipality in Georgia,
is celebrating its 192nd birthday; and
WHEREAS,
Fort Gaines is a small rural community in Southwest Georgia and its history is
rich, its natural resources bountiful, and its citizens friendly;
and
WHEREAS,
the city was founded on April 2, 1816, by General Edmond Pendleton Gaines as
part of the settlement of the 20 million acre Tallassee Territory, which the
United States received after General Andrew Jackson won the Creek Indian War in
1814; and
WHEREAS,
during its history, Fort Gaines has been a fortress two more times, once in
1836, during the Indian uprising resulting from their relocation to Oklahoma,
and again in 1863, as a Confederate States of America fort defending the
Chattahoochee River against the Union Navy who was proceeding upriver to
Columbus, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Fort Gaines began as an outpost along what was then America's western frontier
and grew to a town in 1830, when General John Dill became the mayor;
and
WHEREAS,
it became the county seat in 1854 when Clay County was established, and grew to
a city of over 6,000 in the 1950's and 1960's during the construction of the
Walter F. George dam, lock, reservoir, and lake; and
WHEREAS,
Fort Gaines, overlooking Lake Walter F. George and known as the "Bass Fishing
Capital of America," is proud of the nearby George Bagby State Park, Lodge and
Marina; the Meadow Links Golf Course; the Frontier Village; the Phenomenon
Hiking and Biking Trail; Georgia's renowned Sutton's Corner Frontier General
Store Museum; the Fort Gaines Historic District and the 200 year old Frontier
Cemetery; and
WHEREAS,
the Fort Gaines Historic Society is planning a celebration of Fort Gaines' 192nd
birthday by having an antique sale in the historic Hatchett Drug Store and a
birthday celebration in downtown Fort Gaines.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize and congratulate Fort Gaines, Georgia, on the celebration of
its 192nd birthday.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the mayor of
Fort Gaines, Georgia.
