RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Central Presbyterian Church on the occasion of its 150th
anniversary; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2008, Central Presbyterian Church of Atlanta,
Georgia, celebrates its 150th year of ministry and faithful worship since the
church was first organized at its original and present location on Capitol Hill
in 1858; and
WHEREAS,
since its founding, Central Presbyterian Church has successfully overcome many
of the challenges faced by urban churches, and through community outreach and
progressive social justice seeking, it continues its role as a vital part of
Atlanta's history, welcoming everyone, regardless of ethnicity or sexual or
political orientation; and
WHEREAS,
Central Presbyterian Church has an ongoing history of prophetic witness and
social action and a dedicated congregation called to worship in the heart of
downtown; and
WHEREAS,
this church has remained a symbol of the spirit and lifeblood of the community
for 150 years of Georgia history and continues to inspire us all to be "on our
way rejoicing"; and
WHEREAS,
the impact that this place of worship has had through its outreach and advocacy
projects can be seen today through its many endeavors, including the Central
Outreach & Advocacy Center, which is visited each year by almost 30,000
homeless and near-homeless people, provides more than 950 households with more
than 74,000 pounds of food, and partners with health providers to treat
multitudes of people for medical issues and addiction and to provide eye exams;
and
WHEREAS,
the Central Night Shelter of Central Presbyterian Church offers homeless men a
safe place to sleep, a dinner, and a sack lunch with the help of volunteers from
more than 30 different churches, university groups, offices, companies,
organizations, families, and individuals; and
WHEREAS,
Central Presbyterian Church also provides invaluable services to the children of
this state by serving the needs of 70 young citizens between six weeks of age to
five and a half years of age through its child development center and by its
participation for the past eight years in the Georgia Pre-K Program;
and
WHEREAS,
Central Presbyterian Church serves as a "homebase for advocates,"opening its
facilities during each legislative session of the General Assembly to advocacy
groups.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the rich history of Central Presbyterian Church,
congratulate it on the occasion of its 150th anniversary, and extend their
heartfelt gratitude for all of the outstanding services and community outreach
programs it provides to the citizens of Atlanta and the State of
Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Central
Presbyterian Church.
