A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Dr. James A. Burran upon the occasion of his retirement as
president of Dalton State College; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
a native of Clovis, New Mexico, Dr. James A. Burran received his bachelor´s
and master´s degrees from Texas Tech University and earned a doctorate in
history from the University of Tennessee; and
WHEREAS,
he began his university system career in 1978 at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural
College in Tifton, serving as an assistant professor, associate professor,
registrar and assistant academic dean, acting president from 1988 through 1989,
and finally as the vice president and dean of Academic Affairs from 1987 through
1995; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Burran took office as the third president of Dalton State College on May 15,
1995; and
WHEREAS,
during his tenure at Dalton State College, he was instrumental in the opening of
the Lorberbaum Liberal Arts Building and the James E. Brown Center, and he
oversaw the addition to the Derrell C. Roberts Library and the renovation of
Bandy Gymnasium; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Burran led the change in 1998 of the institution´s mission and name
from a two-year institution known as Dalton College to a state college known as
Dalton State College; and
WHEREAS,
under his leadership, ten new baccalaureate degree programs were created in
Management, Marketing, Management Information Systems, Technology Management,
Marketing Systems, Social Work, Early Childhood Education, Accounting, Biology,
and Mathematics; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Burran oversaw the growth of the Dalton State College Foundation's assets
from $2 million to $30 million and articulated the vision for the foundation to
acquire real estate adjacent to the campus, inspiring the launching of the
college's first capital campaign; and
WHEREAS,
he is also involved in his community as a member of the Board of Directors for
the Northwest Georgia Workforce Investment Board, the Board of Trustees for the
Creative Arts Guild of Dalton, the Board of Directors for the Dalton-Whitfield
Target Tomorrow Strategic Planning Task Force, and the Rotary Club of Dalton;
and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Burran and his wife, Sally, have two grown sons, Andy and Ben, and a dog
named Vern; and
WHEREAS,
his significant leadership and achievement have raised Dalton State College to a
new level of excellence and performance.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY that Dr. James A. Burran is
hereby recognized and commended on the occasion of his retirement as president
of Dalton State College and recognized for his exemplary service to the college,
his community, and this state.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. James A.
Burran.
