RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending JOCADA (Jewel of Celebrated Artistry da, Inc.); and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the board of directors for JOCADA (Jewel of Celebrated Artistry da, Inc.), is
expanding its museum to include African American history and culture;
and
WHEREAS,
the expansion will bring about awareness for the preservation, promotion, and
fostering of jazz and African American educational arts; and
WHEREAS,
the new museum will be known as JOCADA Museum of Jazz and African American
History and will open its doors at an open house celebration to be held on
Saturday, February 16, 2008, in Douglasville, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
the JOCADA Museum of Jazz and African American History is the first of its kind
in Douglas County, Georgia, offering in-depth jazz and African American and
Native American artistic expression; and
WHEREAS,
each member of the board of directors and the honorary board members have a
minimum of 25 years´ experience in jazz arts education, African American,
Italian, and Native American cultural education, and each is committed to
meeting the goals that have been set for the new museum; and
WHEREAS,
the museum offers a program called "Beyond Barriers," which is an effort to
encourage children, some of which are "at risk," to make the right choices and
strive toward obtaining an education even though they may face obstacles;
and
WHEREAS, several Douglas County students are graduates of the Youth Against Violence Program and will be recognized, along with several African American role models and African American inventors, at the upcoming open house; and
WHEREAS, after-school mentoring and personal mentoring will be provided through programs at the museum.

NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body
recognizes the JOCADA Museum of Jazz and African American History and commends
them for their efforts.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby
authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to
Councilwoman Callye B. Holmes.
