RESOLUTION
Recognizing
February 6, 2008, as "Girls and Women in Sports Day"; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
"Girls and Women in Sports Day" falls on February 6, 2008, and its purpose is to
recognize women and girls in sports across Georgia, to celebrate the outstanding
achievements of female athletes, and to direct attention to the unique issues
facing females in sports; and
WHEREAS,
the girls and women of Georgia have always been winners in their athletic
endeavors on the sports fields and arenas across Georgia and the globe;
and
WHEREAS,
many groups and individuals have worked tirelessly to promote and enhance
opportunities for female athletes in Georgia´s schools and communities;
and
WHEREAS,
the number of women, young and old, competing in athletic events continues to
grow, and Georgia´s women continue to shine in their athletic performances,
most recently for all to see at the 2003 women´s Final Four in Atlanta;
and
WHEREAS,
the entire State of Georgia is proud of its female athletes, both past and
present, and is grateful for the reflected glory; and
WHEREAS,
it has been proven that participation in athletics strengthens the self-esteem
as well as health of Georgia´s girls and women and enhances their ability
to lead full lives and to contribute to their community and family;
and
WHEREAS,
in connection with "Girls and Women in Sports Day," the most outstanding female
high school and college athletes in Georgia during the past year will be named
and honored; and
WHEREAS,
in order to commend and honor Georgia´s female athletes, the state will
recognize February 6, 2008, as "Girls and Women in Sports Day."
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body
recognizes February 6, 2008, as "Girls and Women in Sports Day" and commends and
congratulates all the girls and women in Georgia who participate in sports and
achieve so much in the world of athletics.
