RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring the life of Dr. Samuel O. Poole; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Samuel O. Poole was born on March 31, 1925, in Americus, Georgia, and
graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in 1949; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Poole served as an internist for a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) unit
during the Korean War and later spent his medical career in private practice in
Gainesville, Georgia, where he lived out his passion of practicing medicine and
helping others; and
WHEREAS,
his commitment to providing medical care to his community was demonstrated by
his service as one of the founders of the Northeast Georgia Diagnostic Clinic in
1972 and by his service in 1967 as chief of staff, and later, director of the
coronary care unit and director of cardiology for the Northeast Georgia Medical
Center; and
WHEREAS,
in 1993, Dr. Poole became a volunteer physician at the Good News Clinic in
Gainesville, and a year later was named the clinic´s medical director, a
position he held until his passing on September 6, 2006, at the age of 81;
and
WHEREAS,
the Good News Clinic is devoted to caring for the indigent, homeless, and those
that cannot afford medical insurance or medical care and, under the direction of
Dr. Poole, the clinic grew to become the largest free medical clinic in Georgia
and one of the largest in the nation; and
WHEREAS,
in recognition of his many contributions and tireless efforts to treat those in
need, on August 10, 2006, the Good News Clinic was renamed in Dr. Poole´s
honor; and
WHEREAS,
he was a faithful and devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville
where he served as a deacon and trustee;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Poole was a devoted husband to his wife, Bess, and a loving father to their two daughters, Julie Knotts and Ellen Overley, and son, Sam Poole, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Poole was a devoted husband to his wife, Bess, and a loving father to their two daughters, Julie Knotts and Ellen Overley, and son, Sam Poole, Jr.; and
WHEREAS,
this caring practitioner and dedicated professional brought medical care and
relief to hundreds, and during the course of his extraordinary career, he
touched the lives of countless patients; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Poole was a remarkable man filled with much strength of character and
compassion for those in need, and he will always be remembered in the hearts of
those who knew him and loved him dearly; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Samuel O. Poole went above and beyond the call of duty to provide caring and
quality treatment to his patients, often at great personal sacrifice to himself,
and it is abundantly fitting and proper that the dedicated service of this
amazing doctor be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body express their deepest and most sincere regret at the passing of Dr.
Samuel O. Poole and extend to his family their utmost appreciation for his
dedicated service to the citizens of Georgia.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Dr. Samuel O. Poole.
