A RESOLUTION


Recognizing Arlington United Methodist Church and congratulating them on their 135th anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Arlington Methodist Episcopal, South, was formed in the same year as Arlington's incorporation, 1873; and

WHEREAS, in the initial years, the church used Arlington Academy as a sanctuary; and

WHEREAS, a frame church was built to house the congregation, and the original church building was later moved to the southwest corner of Dogwood Avenue and Mayfair Street, and converted to a private residence; and

WHEREAS, the church building presently used by the congregation was built in 1908, and was designed by Columbus architect, T. Firth Lockwood, Sr., using the Romanesque style of architecture; and

WHEREAS, H. A. Granger of Dawson was the contractor and the building committee that supervised the construction included J. S. Cowart, C. W. Sirmons, W. E. Bostwick, W. E. Saunders, and J. B. Lofton; and

WHEREAS, the first service in the new building was held Sunday, October 11, 1908; and

WHEREAS, Reverend William E. Arnold preached the first sermon in the new church and his theme for the service was, "Building of the Temple, and Christ Greater Than the Temple"; and

WHEREAS, the official name of the church was changed from Arlington Methodist Episcopal, South to Arlington Methodist Church in 1939, and when the Methodist Church merged with the United Brethren in 1968, the name was changed to Arlington United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS, on April 5, 1990, Arlington United Methodist Church was certified and placed on the National Register of Historic Places, making Calhoun County the last of Georgia's 159 counties to be represented on the National Register.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize Arlington United Methodist Church and congratulate them on the celebration of their 135th anniversary.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Arlington United Methodist Church.
