A
RESOLUTION
Commending
Gene McClure and inviting him to appear before the House of Representatives; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Gene McClure has been named the recipient of the 2008 Joe Dey Award in
recognition of his meritorious service as a volunteer to the game of golf; and
WHEREAS,
Gene McClure has served on the Regional Affairs Committee of the United States
Golf Association (USGA) for more than 15 years and worked at many USGA, state,
and collegiate championships as a committee member, rules official, and referee;
and
WHEREAS,
he was lured to the game of golf at the age of 14 in his native Macon, Georgia,
by a neighborhood doctor and continued to play throughout high school and
college; and
WHEREAS,
he attended Emory University in Atlanta, earning his law degree and then
becoming an Air Force accounting and finance officer; and
WHEREAS,
while stationed at bases in Canada and Wyoming, he competed and conducted
several tournaments, which laid the foundation for his future as a volunteer in
Georgia and eventually with the USGA; and
WHEREAS,
after leaving the Air Force, he joined Ansley Golf Club in Atlanta, where he met
the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) executive director who asked him to
become involved in conducting association events; and
WHEREAS,
over the years he has continued to actively work with the USGA and the GSGA, and
he has served as the director of the Atlanta Junior Golf Association, a trustee
of the Georgia Junior Golf Foundation and GSGA's charitable foundation, a member
of the Bobby Jones Foundation, and the Atlanta History Center's executive
committee; and
WHEREAS,
his generosity includes philanthropic projects in Atlanta such as serving as a
board member and president of the Ansley Park Civic Association, a board member
of the Piedmont Park Conservancy, and a member of the Mayor's Special Task
Force; and
WHEREAS,
he is a national advocate for home care and hospice, doing legal work throughout
the United States; and
WHEREAS,
he manages his charitable and civic work while maintaining a full-time job as
partner in his Atlanta-based law firm, McClure and McMorries, P.C., along with
dedicating time to his family that includes wife Sharon, two daughters, a son,
and grandson.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize Gene McClure, commend his numerous outstanding
accomplishments, and invite him to appear before this body on a date and time
designated by the Speaker of the House for the purposes of being recognized by
the House and receiving an appropriate copy of this resolution.
