A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
the veterans of the Vietnam War; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
conflict is often necessary to preserve the freedoms and liberties we enjoy in
this great nation; and
WHEREAS,
these freedoms and liberties are secured for us by those Americans who have
answered the call of duty for their country and served us honorably around the
world; and
WHEREAS,
over 2.5 million individuals served this nation from August 7, 1965, to April
30, 1975, in Vietnam, risking life and limb in this conflict; and
WHEREAS,
of approximately 228,000 Georgians who served in that conflict, 1,582 gave their
last measure of full devotion to this nation; and
WHEREAS,
Vietnam veterans and their family members are to be commended for their brave
deeds and unparalleled service in the face of one of the most difficult periods
in American history; and
WHEREAS,
those veterans can only be repaid by the most sincere and humble thanks, a
tribute to those soldiers who are now stewards to the memory of their fallen
compatriots; and
WHEREAS,
all Georgians are encouraged to recognize Vietnam veterans for their dedicated
and honorable service in the pursuit of freedom and democracy, for the sacrifice
they made, and the continuing sacrifices they and their families make;
and
WHEREAS,
the honorable soldiers who returned were not given the public adoration and
accolades reserved for those who serve and sacrifice for their country, honors
rightly deserved though unjustly withheld in those troubled times.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body welcome home the veterans of the Vietnam War and sincerely and humbly
pay tribute to all veterans for their honorable service to the State of Georgia
and the United States of America.
