RESOLUTION
Recognizing
"Delta Sigma Theta Day" and inviting representatives of the sorority to appear
before this body; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
on January 13, 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded as a public service
sorority by 22 young women at Howard University; and
WHEREAS,
since its founding, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has grown to include more
than 200,000 members in more than 900 chapters located in the United States,
England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti, Liberia, the
Bahamas, Panama, and the Republic of Korea; and there are more than 50 local
chapters throughout the State of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Louise A. Rice, Ph.D., serves as the national president of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc.; and
WHEREAS,
the goals and ideals of Delta Sigma Theta are reflected in its five-point
program based on economic development, educational development, international
awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness
and involvement; and
WHEREAS,
Delta is reaching out across the nation with diverse public service projects,
including Delta Habitat for Humanity; Project Cherish; Project SMART; The Delta
Immunization Campaign; School America; Preparing Our Sons for Manhood; the Delta
Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and AIDS Community Education Project; Dr. Betty Shabazz
Delta Academy; and Summit Five Health and Healing.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize February 5, 2008, as "Delta Sigma Theta Day" in recognition
of the sorority's commitment to community service.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the representatives of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority are
hereby invited to appear before the House of Representatives at a date and time
to be fixed by the Speaker of the House for the purposes of being recognized by
the House and receiving appropriate copies of this resolution.
