A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the City of Clarkston on its 125th birthday; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the City of Clarkston was officially chartered by Governor Alexander H. Stevens
on December 12, 1882; and
WHEREAS,
Clarkston was named in honor of Colonel W. W. Clark, a Covington lawyer and a
director of the Georgia Railroad; and
WHEREAS,
in the 1830's the Georgia Railroad built a rail line through Clarkston to
connect the merchants in Atlanta and Athens with outlets in Augusta and South
Carolina. Because the railroad made Atlanta so accessible for commuting,
Clarkston became one of the South's first "suburban" communities;
and
WHEREAS,
in the early 1900's "Goatsville" and "Angora Heights" were names bestowed on
Clarkston. At that time it was prestigious to own many goats, and many
Clarkstonians were proud to own 15 to 20 of these prized creatures. Even today,
Clarkston High School pays homage to this history by having the Angora Goat as
their school mascot; and
WHEREAS,
Clarkston is centrally located in DeKalb County and encompasses approximately
1.1 square miles. The residents of Clarkston enjoy the small town feel and have
never attempted to expand the boundaries of the city.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body honor the City of Clarkston on its 125th birthday and send their best
wishes for many more successful years as a small town in the big
city.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the mayor and
city council of the City of Clarkston.
