A RESOLUTION


Commending Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the Georgia District Chapters; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was founded by the seven young men: Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy, affectionately known as the "Seven Jewels," on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, who laid a firm foundation for the principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha college and graduate chapters have worked diligently and tirelessly to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices facing African Americans through various programs and endeavors such as "Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College," A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, Project Alpha, Alpha Head Start Fatherhood Initiative, Leadership Academies, mentoring, affordable housing programs, scholarships, and many other community service projects; and

WHEREAS, the chapters of the Georgia District, under the leadership of its 11th District Director Ronald M. Natson, Sr., have provided outstanding leadership in their communities through the implementation of the fraternity's national programs and special projects and have uplifted their communities by living up to the fraternity's goals of Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for all Mankind; and

WHEREAS, numerous members have called the State of Georgia home, most notably Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mayor Maynard Jackson, Ambassador Andrew Young, Georgia Supreme Court Justice Robert Benham, Congressman David Scott, and among the numerous members who have been outstanding national leaders in the struggle to achieve civil rights in America are Senator Edward Brooke, Dr. W. E. B. DuBois, Congressman William Gray, Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, and United States Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the Georgia District Chapters for their outstanding contributions to this nation and the State of Georgia, and proclaim February 21, 2008, as "Alpha Phi Alpha Day at the Capitol."

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Georgia District Director and representatives of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., are invited to appear before the House of Representatives on a day and at a time designated by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia District Director and the Chairperson of the Political Action Committee of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
