A
RESOLUTION
Commending
Mr. John Davis and the patriots of the Davis family; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mr. John Davis was born in Gilmer County, Georgia, in 1880, and on March 9,
1909, he married Mary Wofford, who was born in Lumpkin County, Georgia, in 1889;
and
WHEREAS,
from this union, seven sons were born, and each one followed their father, who
served as master sergeant during the Spanish-American War and retired after 30
years of service to his country, into military service; and
WHEREAS,
the seven Davis brothers served a combined 160 years in the American military
services: J. Rue Davis was an army captain, Woodrow W. Davis was a sergeant in
the army and air force, Richard D. Davis served as master sergeant in the army
and air force, Ceylon Davis was a tech sergeant in the Marine Corps and army,
James E. Davis was a staff sergeant in the Marine Corps and air force, and
Douglas W. Davis was a private in the air force; and
WHEREAS,
the proud tradition continued to the next generation, with grandsons and
sons-in-law serving their country throughout the world; and
WHEREAS,
James E. Davis is the last surviving Davis brother and, after serving in public
education for 25 years, retired to the Athens, Georgia, area; and
WHEREAS,
the Davis family motto is best expressed in a quote by Marine Corps veteran Zell
Miller, "If it is worth living here in this God-given land, it is worth putting
your life on the line."
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body express gratitude and admiration for John Davis and the men of the
Davis family for their sacrifices for their
country.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to James E. Davis.
