A RESOLUTION


Commending James Jackson "Jack" Smith; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, James Jackson "Jack" Smith, an esteemed citizen of the State of Georgia, is the son of the late W. J. Smith, Jr., and the late Kate Aspinwall Smith; and

WHEREAS, he was married to the late Chloe Henriott Smith for 44 years, proudly raising two children, Tommy Smith and Sherrie Dyal, and he has provided wonderful guidance to his two grandchildren, Diana Britt and Allison Dyal, and great-granddaughter, Olivia Chloe Britt; and

WHEREAS, after Chloe's unfortunate passing in 1992, Jack remarried to Helen Davis in 1994, becoming the stepgrandfather of Kenny Murphy and Angie Bishop and stepgreat-grandfather to Anna Bishop; and

WHEREAS, Jack's athletic ability and love of sports is well known throughout the community, and several neighbors still recount stories about his performance as one of the best ball handlers and shooters on the 1946 Bacon County Bees basketball team that captured the 8th district championship, losing the state championship by only two points; and

WHEREAS, he has served his neighbors diligently as a postmaster and rural carrier for the Alma Post Office for 37 outstanding years of continuous employment, and he is a member of the First Baptist Church of Alma; and

WHEREAS, Jack is known for his delicious chicken salad and for his famous hot dog sauce, the recipe of which he continues to keep a closely guarded secret; and

WHEREAS, he has provided indispensable help to Sherrie during her career at Twin Oaks Nursing Home in Alma and assisted her during her volunteer work for the senior citizens of Bacon County and other projects; and
WHEREAS, his intelligent advice, financial assistance, and enthusiasm were instrumental
in Tommy Smith's election campaign as a Georgia State Representative in 1978 as well as in later political contests, and Jack's constant support has also aided his stepdaughter, City Councilmember Peggy Murphy, and Sherrie's husband, County Commission Chairman Eugene Dyal.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize this outstanding citizen of the State of Georgia, James Jackson "Jack" Smith; commend his numerous inspiring accomplishments; and extend to him their sincerest best wishes for his future health and fulfillment.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to James Jackson "Jack" Smith.
