A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT

To amend Part 2 of Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to competencies and core curriculum in elementary and secondary education, so as to encourage the annual observance of "Georgia Day" in public elementary and secondary schools; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:

SECTION 1.
Part 2 of Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to competencies and core curriculum in elementary and secondary education, is amended by adding a new Code section to read as follows:
"20-2-149.
All public elementary and secondary schools in this state are encouraged to observe the twelfth day of February of each year, under the name of 'Georgia Day,' as the anniversary of the landing of the first colonists in Georgia under Oglethorpe. The local boards of education are urged to encourage the teachers of the schools under their supervision to conduct on that day exercises in which the pupils shall take part, consisting of written compositions, readings, recitations, addresses, or other exercises appropriate to the various grade levels, relating to this state and its history and to the lives of distinguished Georgians. When such date falls on a day which is not a school day, Georgia Day should be observed on the following school day."

SECTION 2.
All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.
