A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
Dr. John W. Culbreath upon his induction into the Albany State University Alumni
Hall of Fame; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Culbreath was born in Monroe, Georgia, and was educated in the public
schools of Walton County; and
WHEREAS,
he graduated as valedictorian from Carver High School in Monroe, and went on to
earn a Bachelor of Arts in French from Albany State College in Albany, Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
he then earned a
masteŕs
degree in administration and supervision from Georgia State University and a
doctor of education degree from the University of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Culbreath has served on the
Governoŕs
Closing the Achievement Gap Commission and on the Georgia Board of Regents'
African-American Male Initiative; and
WHEREAS,
he is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Albany Rotary Club, ONE
Albany, 100 Black Men of Albany, and the Albany/Dougherty Partnership for
Excellence; and
WHEREAS,
he has served on the boards of the Salvation Army, the Albany Museum of Arts,
the Boys and Girls Club, Regions Bank, United Way of Southwest Georgia, The
Anchorage, the Consumer Credit Council, the Albany State University Foundation,
Communities in Schools, and the Albany Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Culbreath has served in many roles in his career as an educator, including
being a French and English teacher in Randolph County Schools and a high school
principal for Atlanta City Schools, and he retired in June, 2001, after serving
six years as the Superintendent of the Dougherty County School System;
and WHEREAS, he has been named
Administrator of the Year by the Georgia Association of Education Office
Personnel, School and Community Leader of the Year by the Georgia School Public
Relations Association, and Man of the Year by the March of Dimes, and was
awarded the Step Up to the Plate Award from the Georgia National Board Teachers
Program; and
WHEREAS,
he recently retired as Interim Dean of the Albany State University College of
Education, where during his tenure he oversaw the renewal of the College of
Educatiońs
accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher
Education; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Culbreath is married to the former Barbara Williams, and they have two
daughters, Cynthia and Carletha, and one son, Adrian James; and
WHEREAS,
he enjoys fishing, reading, writing, watching sports, traveling, cooking, and
tinkering with computers; and
WHEREAS,
the Culbreaths are members of the Second Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and Dr.
Culbreath is a Sunday Word Study teacher and coordinator of the Tribal Ministry;
and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Culbreath is committed to the belief that ALL CHILDREN CAN LEARN if they are
properly taught.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body honor Dr. John W. Culbreath for his life of service devoted to
education and to his community.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Dr. John W.
Culbreath and to the Albany State University Alumni Hall of Fame.
