A RESOLUTION

Commending the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA); and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the leadership, staff, and employees of MARTA should be commended for their magnanimous deeds in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; and

WHEREAS, MARTA has been integrally involved in the cooperative efforts of metropolitan Atlantans to respond to the overwhelming needs created by the hurricane's massive destruction; and

WHEREAS, MARTA has provided buses to move hurricane evacuees and their pets from Dobbins Air Force Base to various shelter locations in Atlanta and as for away as Madison; and

WHEREAS, on September 6, MARTA provided shuttle service to the Red Cross and is providing shuttle service and fare media to New Orleans police officers and firefighters and their families who are in the City of Atlanta for a respite; and

WHEREAS, 13 MARTA police personnel and the mobile command vehicle will be dispatched to Jackson County, Mississippi, on September 9 as requested by Georgia Homeland Security and GEMA; and

WHEREAS, some employees of MARTA have taken into their homes families that have been displaced by the hurricane; and

WHEREAS, MARTA has distributed tokens to the Red Cross as well as weekly fare cards and weekend fare cards to county emergency management agencies for disbursement to evacuees; and

WHEREAS, the MARTA Charity Club has made a generous monetary donation to the relief efforts; and

WHEREAS, responding compassionately and effectively to a disaster of this unprecedented magnitude is enormously difficult, and it is altogether fitting and proper that this body acknowledge and commend the leadership, staff, and employees of MARTA.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend MARTA for its generous efforts on behalf of the victims of Hurricane Katrina and express their gratitude.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to MARTA.
