A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the memory of Joseph West Jones; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
a native of Georgetown, Delaware, Joseph West Jones earned a degree from Goldey
Beacom College in 1932, and initiated his business career in real estate; and
WHEREAS,
in 1935, he embarked on a brilliant career with The Coca-Cola Company, where he
is recognized as the longest serving employee in the history of the company;
and
WHEREAS,
during his 70 years with The Coca-Cola Company, he rose from serving as
secretary to the President of the Coca-Cola Export Corporation to become a
senior vice president of the company and a member of the board of directors;
and
WHEREAS,
he served as assistant to Chairman Robert Woodruff, relocating to Atlanta in
1947 and becoming Mr. Woodruff’s closest and most trusted associate;
and
WHEREAS,
he provided outstanding leadership as chairman of the Robert W. Woodruff
Foundation, the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation, and the Lettie Pate Evans
Foundation; as a trustee for the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation, the Coca-Cola
Foundation, the Goizueta Foundation, and the Callaway Foundation; and as a
member of the boards of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Woodward Academy;
and
WHEREAS,
the Woodruff Foundation trustees recognized his indefatigable dedication by
naming the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center in his honor, and the
center has become a leading institution in encouraging protection of the
environment and enlightened natural resource management; and
WHEREAS,
he reared a fine family of a daughter, Terry, and two sons, Joseph and John; and
had six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS,
it is altogether fitting and proper that we honor the memory of this exemplary
citizen.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body honor the memory of Joseph West Jones and extend sincere condolences
to his beloved wife, Cecile Malone Jones, and his family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Cecile Malone
Jones.
