A RESOLUTION

Commending the Macon Bears; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Macon Bears were back-to-back state champions for 2004 and 2005 for wheelchair basketball in the Georgia chapter of the American Association of Adapted Sports Programs (AAASP); and

WHEREAS, originating in Atlanta in 1997, the AAASP provides an avenue for children with physical disabilities or visual impairments to participate in interscholastic sports, and the program, which is open to students under age 21, includes 11 wheelchair basketball teams in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the Macon Bears have an extraordinary record of accomplishments, having won the state wheelchair basketball championship held in conjunction with the Georgia High School Association State Basketball Championships in 2004 and 2005; and

WHEREAS, this record of achievement gives testimony to the hard work, dedication, and commitment of the members of the team and to their incredible talents and reflects the time and energy poured into this program by their superlative coaches; and

WHEREAS, the members of the Macon Bears are Danielle Duncan, Tommie Gray, Edward Hill, Antonio Jackson, Jennifer Kinard, Ebony Meredith, Matthew Wingo, and Joshua Wright; and the team coaches are Glynn Watkins, who has coached the Macon Bears for nine years, and Jarvis Emory, a former AAASP athlete and referee; and

WHEREAS, this fine team and its coaches are deserving of our support and admiration, and it is fitting and proper that the Macon Bears be commended for their achievements.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the Macon Bears for their incredible athletic achievements and wish them continued success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the players and coaches of the Macon Bears.
