RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public
Health's Tuberculosis Program; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
in the late 19th century, tuberculosis killed one out of every seven people
living in the United States and Europe; and
WHEREAS,
on March 24, 1882, Dr. Robert Koch announced the discovery of the tuberculosis
bacillus, and, a century later in 1982, the World Health Organization along with
the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease sponsored the
first World TB Day; and
WHEREAS,
today, tuberculosis is one of the leading causes of death from infectious
disease, with an estimated two billion people, or one-third of the world's
population, infected with the bacteria that causes tuberculosis and
approximately two million who die each year from tuberculosis; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health's
Tuberculosis Program will recognize World TB Day on Thursday, March 24, 2005,
and will host a community forum designed to educate the public about the
devastating health and economic consequences of tuberculosis, its effect on
developing countries, and its continued tragic impact on global health;
and
WHEREAS,
the day's events will include tuberculosis education awareness activities,
games, and commentary from community leaders and will provide an opportunity for
tuberculosis programs, partnering organizations, and others to share information
about their individual program as well as speak on the importance of community
health and tuberculosis awareness.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
the value and importance of the Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division
of Public Health's Tuberculosis Program and commend their efforts to raise
public awareness about this devastating disease.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia Department of
Human Resources.
