A RESOLUTION

Urging the Senate to recite the pledge of allegiance to the Georgia flag at appropriate times; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Georgia law has included a pledge of allegiance to the Georgia flag since 1951; and

WHEREAS, Official Code of Georgia Annotated Section 50-3-2 provides that the pledge of allegiance to the state flag is: "I pledge allegiance to the Georgia flag and to the principles for which it stands: Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation"; and

WHEREAS, the words of the pledge of allegiance to the Georgia flag appropriately encompass the words "Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation," which have appeared on the Great Seal of Georgia for more than 90 years; and

WHEREAS, the existence and words of the pledge of allegiance to the Georgia flag are not well known among Senators or other Georgians; and

WHEREAS, it is altogether fitting and proper for the Senate to recite the pledge to the Georgia flag.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body are urged to adopt a custom of reciting the pledge to the Georgia flag in unison at appropriate times, including but not limited to the first and last days of the General Assembly session, near the beginning of the Senate proceedings on such days.
