RESOLUTION
Honoring
and commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the City of Climax, Georgia; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
lying along the Fowlstown ridge, which runs the length of Decatur County, the
City of Climax received its name because it is the highest point of elevation on
the railroad between Savannah and the Chattahoochee River; and
WHEREAS,
the town was established after the Civil War, but its earliest known settler,
Duncan Curry, came to this area in 1824 to raise his three sons and one
daughter, Calvin, Duncan, Jr., Archie, and Sarah Jane; and
WHEREAS,
in 1850, the Curry brothers built the first Presbyterian church, which was
organized in 1852, just one day after the Bainbridge Presbyterian church;
and
WHEREAS,
another family of early and colorful settlers, the Trulock family, came from
England and settled in the area around 1840; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Sutton Trulock was 60 years old when he came to Decatur County with his
highly aristocratic wife, Mary Hines, whom it is said requested tea in bed each
and every morning; and
WHEREAS,
these early families played a significant role in the history of Climax, and, in
fact, the first two deeds of land sold in the city bear their names;
and
WHEREAS,
incorporated in 1905, the town boasted a main street known as Front Street,
which ran along the railroad track, as well as an impressive business district,
including the Farmer's Bank, Trulock Supply Company, Brinson Meat Market, Mr.
Moseley's drug store, a barber shop, a post office, Dr. Bailey's office, and a
Delco plant, which supplied electricity from 6:00 P.M. until 12:00 Midnight;
and
WHEREAS, today, Climax remains a small yet vibrant and friendly city whose benches and shops still buzz with the swapping of stories and legends about its colorful past; and

WHEREAS,
Climax is home to the highly anticipated Swine Time Festival sponsored by the
Climax Community Club, whose members work hand in hand with the city and the
residents of Climax to preserve and promote a high quality of life in their
community and the surrounding areas; and
WHEREAS,
Climax is also home to an outstanding fire department, which is under the
excellent leadership of Jeff and Phillip Kelly, and an exemplary police
department, which benefits from the expert direction of Tom Jones;
and
WHEREAS,
2005 marks the 100th Anniversary of the great City of Climax, Georgia, and it is
absolutely fitting and proper that this body join in the recognition of this
significant and historical milestone.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body honor and
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the City of Climax and extend to each and
every resident of the city best wishes on this auspicious occasion for many more
years of health and prosperity.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the mayor of the City of
Climax.
