A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the Augusta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, founded on the Howard University campus in Washington, D.C., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is an international public service sorority that has initiated and promoted cutting edge community service programs and projects since 1913; and

WHEREAS, a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominantly black college educated women, the sorority focuses its efforts on promoting economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement; and

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has chosen the fight against HIV/AIDS and obesity in the African American community as part of its national initiatives; and

WHEREAS, an International Day of Service has focused the attention of the entire sorority on the spread of HIV/AIDS and obesity as well as its impact on our families and communities in both this country and the African continent; and

WHEREAS, the Augusta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., seeks to promote health and wellness by adopting the theme "Health and Healing–Let It Continue" for a series of programs, including providing confidential HIV/AIDS testing; fundraising; collecting books, toys, toiletries, and household cleaning items; purchasing medications; and sponsoring an HIV/AIDS walk; and

WHEREAS, the Augusta Alumnae Chapter has partnered with local healthcare providers to plan and implement a youth health forum to present quality seminars that provide information and promote awareness regarding various healthcare issues to students throughout the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in recognizing the Augusta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for their outstanding service to their community and their dedication to improving the quality of life of their fellow citizens.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Augusta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
