RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring the life of James Frank Myers, Jr.; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
James Frank Myers, Jr. was born on June 21, 1920, in Plains, Georgia, to his
loving parents, James Frank Myers and Mary Girvan Myers Dupree, and graduated as
valedictorian of his class from Anthony School; and
WHEREAS,
receiving his law degree in 1948, Mr. Myers went on to become a much respected
and accomplished lawyer in Americus, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Myers served his country with honor and courage during World War II, and,
after returning to his home, became a passionate advocate for his community and
his state, serving in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1949 to 1950;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Myers also served as Mayor of Americus, and will be remembered as an honest
and progressive public servant whose fierce determination and tireless
dedication were essential to rebuilding race relations after the school
integration crisis of the early 1970s; and
WHEREAS,
being involved in numerous civic activities, Mr. Myers was always enthusiastic
to find new ways in which to serve the citizens of Americus and Sumter County
and, as such, founded The Sumter Free Press in 1998; and
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia lost a most estimable citizen and beloved public servant on
January 3, 2005, with the passing of Mr. James Frank Myers.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join
together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mr. James Frank
Myers, Jr. and extend their most sincere condolences to his family and the
community of Americus and Sumter County, Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. James
Frank Myers, Jr. and the Mayor and Council of the City of Americus, Georgia.
