A
RESOLUTION
Commending
and remembering the life of Deputy Joseph Whitehead; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Joseph Whitehead, a deputy with the Bibb County
Sheriff́s
Office, was tragically killed in the line of duty on March 23, 2006, at the age
of 36; and
WHEREAS,
Deputy Whitehead, an 11 year veteran of the
sheriff́s
office, bravely served his community and the citizens of this state as a career
peace officer, having served as an officer in the jail, a road patrol officer,
and, in 2002, moving to the drug squad; and
WHEREAS,
he was also a certified firearms instructor and was frequently called upon to
speak on law enforcement issues facing the community; and
WHEREAS,
while assigned to the drug squad, Joseph Whitehead played a vital role in
protecting society from drugs, with key involvement in a number of high-profile
drug cases, and important cooperative missions with federal agencies, including
the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and
Explosives; and
WHEREAS,
Deputy Whitehead was greatly respected by other law enforcement officers and
agents who knew that they could depend on him and that if they were sent "out on
any call with Deputy Whitehead, their backup would be there"; and
WHEREAS,
Joseph Whitehead was also held in the highest regard by the officials and
citizens he honorably served, renowned for his humility in service and his
aggressive fight to preserve public safety and order; and
WHEREAS,
Joseph Whitehead demonstrated courage, dedication, and the greatest sacrifice of
all as he gave his life to help protect and defend the citizens of Georgia from
the forces of evil; and
WHEREAS,
Joseph Whitehead was first and foremost a man devoted to his family, a loving
husband, and a father of three children; and
WHEREAS,
Joseph Whitehead will be remembered always as a shining example to us all and a
true hero.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
and remember the bravery and sacrifice of Deputy Joseph Whitehead and extend
their sincerest condolences to his family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Joseph Whitehead.
