RESOLUTION
Recognizing
April 10, 2006, as "Hugh C. Bailey Science Center Day" in Georgia; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Hugh C. Bailey served Valdosta State University as its sixth president for
more than 22 years before retiring in 2001; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Bailey engineered university status for Valdosta State University in the
1990s, making this institution one of Georgia's two regional universities;
and
WHEREAS,
it is estimated that during his presidency at Valdosta State University,
beginning in 1978, Dr. Bailey awarded students more than 26,000 degrees;
and
WHEREAS,
under his leadership, Valdosta State University experienced a period of
remarkable development, with academic standards increased, many new programs
added, and a tremendous growth in enrollment, faculty, and staff;
and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Bailey has been widely recognized for his commitment to quality design and
his dedication to preserving Valdosta State University's unique Spanish Mission
style of architecture; and
WHEREAS,
construction of new facilities during Dr. Bailey's tenure exceeded $60 million,
including the $22.4 million Biology/Chemistry Building, a 148,165 square-foot
facility featuring a three-story atrium, 22 teaching and 19 research
laboratories, two greenhouses, 11 classrooms, two auditoriums, two conference
rooms, and 41 offices; and
WHEREAS,
this major building is designed to be inviting to students and to present the
study of science as accessible and engaging; and
WHEREAS,
Valdosta State University, with approval from the Board of Regents of the
University System of Georgia, has named the Biology/Chemistry Building the "Hugh
C. Bailey Science Center"; and
WHEREAS,
university officials are planning a formal naming ceremony for the newly named
center for April 10, 2006, as part of the Valdosta State University Centennial
events and upon the completion of a new pedestrian mall that will surround the
building; and
WHEREAS,
the naming of the "Hugh C. Bailey Science Center" not only honors Dr. Bailey,
but also his wife, Mrs. Joan Bailey, and all those students, faculty, staff,
alumni, donors, and other friends of the university who were involved with
Valdosta State University during the memorable and prosperous years of the
Bailey Administration.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
recognizing April 10, 2006, as "Hugh C. Bailey Science Center Day" in Georgia in
honor of Dr. Bailey's extraordinary service to Valdosta State University and the
people of Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Dr. Hugh C. Bailey and to
Valdosta State University.
